Mobile Prevention and Care Team (M-PACT)

The goals of the M-PACT Clinic program are:

• Develop a nurse-led mobile health unit to provide culturally sensitive and quality care to rural and underserved communities.
• Increase nursing student aptitude in addressing the social determinants of health (SDOH) through both didactic and longitudinal experiential clinical training.
• Increase the diversity of the nursing workforce through recruitment and support of nursing students and faculty from diverse populations.
• Increase nursing faculty and staff aptitude in teaching social determinants of health, health equity, and health literacy.

M-PACT Scholars

The M-PACT Scholars program consists of 2-credit master’s level online didactic courses: Addressing Social Drivers of Health in Underserved and Rural Communities I & II. Students selected as M-PACT Scholars will participate in 112 hours of longitudinal experiential clinical training. The clinical training will include excursions (half day events within 90 miles of Durham), a week-long immersion experience in a rural area, and a community partner or health department quality assurance/quality improvement project. The Scholars take both didactic courses and clinical coursework (1 credit hour each semester). All Scholars receive scholarships to cover their tuition as well as all travel expenses.

Addressing Social Drivers of Health in Underserved and Rural Communities I is offered in summer and fall semesters. The second course is offered in fall and spring. Ten students per cohort will be selected as M-PACT Scholars through an application process. Applications open in January and March each year.

Can I just take the two-hour didactic course?

    Yes. There are other clinical opportunities available to fulfill your elective course hours.

Who is eligible for the M-PACT Scholars program?

    Rising third semester ABSN students and MSN students (beginning in 2024)

When I complete the application, am I applying for entry into the program AND the scholarship or are these two separate applications?

    There is one application. Students who are selected become eligible for the scholarship.

How many credit hours are the classes worth?

• A two-hour didactic component.
• A one-hour clinical component.

Do these classes count towards my graduation?

    Yes, both classes are clinical elective courses eligible for graduation credits.

Can I still take other electives?

    Yes

What if I cannot complete the program due to unexpected circumstances?

    After accepting the offer to join the M-PACT Scholars program, students must complete the two didactic courses and clinical hours. Scholarships will be rescinded if students cannot complete the coursework (six hours over two semesters).
